With Memorial Day right around the corner, our thoughts go towards what we will do with this “day off”. Picnics, the beach, boating…family, friends, celebration…rest, silence, inner work, all may enter our minds as possibilities as plans are made for the unofficial beginning of summer.
Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored those who had passed. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who died in any war or military action. In Unity, we join with our nation in this sacred honoring, expanding the parameters to include all people, everywhere, who have lost their lives to war and those affected by war, and all those dear to us who, for any reason, are now gone from our lives.
Join us this Sunday for a sacred candle-lighting ceremony, as we light candles symbolizing the light of love that forever burns within us, the memories of those dear to us. This is the “Season for Healing”. The honoring of our past, our friends, our families, and the world is a blessed part of that healing. These divine connections, and the continuing awareness of our oneness, are gifts which are an integral part of who we are today – beautiful, unique, blessed children of God and of our One Human Family.
